Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Bhutan?
Bhutan is a small Himalayan kingdom between India and China (Tibet). The nearest Indian gateway is Siliguri/Bagdogra in North Bengal, about 4–5 hours by road from the Phuentsholing border. Learn more about Bhutan.
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Bhutan?
No. Indian citizens need a free entry permit, issued on presenting a valid passport or original Voter ID card. Aadhaar and PAN are not accepted.
Do international tourists need a visa?
Yes. International visitors need visa approval before travelling. The visa fee is USD 40, and the visa is stamped on arrival.
What is the SDF and how much is it?
The Sustainable Development Fee is a daily fee per tourist. It is currently ₹1,200 per night for Indian nationals and USD 100 per night for international visitors. Children aged 6–12 pay half, and children under 6 are exempt.
Do I have to book through a tour operator?
Indian travellers may plan independently, but must still follow permit, hotel and guide rules. Most visitors find it far easier, and often cheaper, to book through a registered operator who arranges permits, hotels, vehicle and guide in one package.
Is a guide compulsory in Bhutan?
A licensed Bhutanese guide is required for most tourist itineraries. All our packages include an experienced, licensed guide.
How many days do I need in Bhutan?
5–6 nights covers the classic route of Thimphu, Punakha and Paro, including Tiger's Nest. With 8–10 nights you can add Phobjikha, Haa or Bumthang. Two weeks or more lets you cross the whole country or go trekking.
What is the best time to visit Bhutan?
March–May and September–November offer the best weather and major festivals. December–February has the clearest mountain views. June–August is green and quiet but rainy.
Is Bhutan safe?
Bhutan is one of the safest countries in Asia, with very low crime and friendly, helpful people.
What currency is used? Can I use Indian Rupees?
The currency is the Ngultrum, pegged 1:1 to the Indian Rupee. Indian Rupees are widely accepted. ATMs are available in major towns.
Will my phone work in Bhutan?
Indian SIMs may work near the border, but international roaming is unreliable and expensive. A local B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM is cheap and easy to get with your ID.
Is Tiger's Nest difficult to hike?
It is a moderate hike: about 4–6 hours round trip with roughly 900 m of ascent. Most reasonably fit travellers manage it at a steady pace, and ponies are available for part of the climb.
What kind of food is available?
Hotels serve Bhutanese, Indian, Chinese and Continental food. Vegetarian meals are easy to find. Explore Bhutanese cuisine.
Can you pick us up from Siliguri, NJP or Bagdogra?
Yes. Our office is in Siliguri, and pickups from Siliguri, NJP, Bagdogra and Hasimara are part of most of our road packages.
