Documents for Indian travellers

  • Adults: an original passport valid for at least six months, or an original Voter ID (EPIC) card. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted for entry.
  • Children under 18: a passport, or the original birth certificate. Older students may also be asked for a school ID. Children should travel with a parent or legal guardian.
  • Passport-size photographs (carry 2–4 for permits).
  • Your confirmed hotel bookings and itinerary, which we provide.

Documents for international travellers

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure from Bhutan.
  • A visa approval letter, applied for before travel through us or the official online portal. The visa is stamped on arrival.
  • Proof of SDF payment, made in advance as part of the visa process.
  • Confirmed flights, or details of your road entry point.

Guides and route permits

Bhutan's "High Value, Low Volume" policy means most visitors travel with a licensed Bhutanese guide. Your entry permit covers the entry town plus Thimphu and Paro. To travel further, for example to Punakha, Phobjikha, Bumthang or Haa, you need a route permit issued by the Immigration Office in Thimphu. We apply for it on your behalf, usually on your first working day in Thimphu.

Note on weekends and holidays: Immigration offices are closed on Sundays and government holidays. We plan arrival days so permits can be processed without delays.

Health and safety

  • No vaccinations are mandatory for most travellers. Check with your doctor about routine vaccines and any recommended for your route.
  • Much of Bhutan sits between 2,000 m and 3,000 m, and passes go higher. Take it easy on your first day, drink plenty of water and let us know about any heart or breathing conditions.
  • Carry personal medicines with a copy of your prescription.
  • Bhutan is one of the safest destinations in Asia, with very low crime.

Customs rules to know

  • Tobacco: Smoking is prohibited in public places. Visitors may bring a limited quantity of tobacco for personal use, subject to customs duty, so keep the receipt.
  • Antiques and religious objects cannot be exported without clearance.
  • Drones require prior permission from the authorities. Do not bring one without a permit.
  • Declare high-value electronics and large amounts of foreign currency on arrival.

Let us handle it. When you book with Global Safari Tours and Treks, we arrange your entry permit or visa, SDF payment, route permits, hotels, vehicle and licensed guide, so you can simply enjoy Bhutan.
