Pickup from Siliguri, NJP or Bagdogra and drive about 4–5 hours through the tea gardens of the Dooars to Phuentsholing on the Bhutan border. Complete entry formalities and visit the Zangto Pelri Lhakhang and the crocodile breeding centre if time permits. Overnight: Phuentsholing
A scenic 5–6 hour mountain drive up to the capital, past waterfalls and the Kharbandi Gompa viewpoint, climbing from subtropical forest to pine-covered valleys. Evening walk in Thimphu town. Overnight: Thimphu
Buddha Dordenma, National Memorial Chorten, Takin Preserve, Simply Bhutan living museum (great for children), the Centenary Farmers' Market and Tashichho Dzong. Your route permit for Punakha and Paro is processed today. Overnight: Thimphu
Cross Dochu La and its 108 chortens, then descend to Punakha. Visit Punakha Dzong and walk across the long suspension bridge over the Pho Chhu. Overnight: Punakha
Drive to Paro via Dochu La. Visit Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Kyichu Lhakhang. Evening shopping for handicrafts. Overnight: Paro
Hike (or ride a pony part of the way) to the Tiger's Nest viewpoint. Families with young children can enjoy the cafeteria viewpoint, which already offers a stunning view. Afternoon at leisure or a visit to Chele La pass. Overnight: Paro
Early start for the drive back down to Phuentsholing and on to Siliguri, NJP or Bagdogra for your onward journey.
